Short Term Objectives

  • Offer a perspective on the delivery of key policies and programmes at a regional level (for example the regional economic strategy).
  • We want to help build a well informed BME  third sector that is aware of and can influence regional policies that affect them (for example work within existing networks to access BME  third sector  and identify groups wanting to engage in policy making).
  • We want to engage in policy development with regional partners, with a view to influence policy development and delivery (for example Local Area Agreements as incorporated in our work plan).

We will link this to the work already undertaken such as BTEG’s report on LSP’s and the women’s resource centre research and report on “where are the women in LSP’s”.

  • Lastly to raise the profile of race equality issues affecting the BME third sector through lobbying, policy responses, communication strategy and representation on key strategic partnership.

Long Term Objectives

In the Long Term we hope to:

  • Provide a regional specialist forum for the exchange of ideas and good practice within the wider third sector on BME issues.
  • Act as a think tank and develop the social, legal, social political and economic inclusion within policy development and delivery.
  • To act as a Catalyst for Change

We are mindful that with the emergence of the new equality and human rights commission the equality environment has changed embracing other equality strands. However, the remit of this board would be race equality and to provide that expertise perspective to regional agencies on regional policies/strategies.

What We Won’t do

It is fundamental for us to set out what the board will not do so as not to cause any unnecessary confusion.

·        Firstly, the board is not a substitute for other forms of consultation that should be undertaken to public bodies as part of their legislative responsibilities.

·        Secondly, no ’local’ work – the board will not undertake roles which are currently being played by other BME TS organisations AND

·        Lastly, we do not claim to be a representative body representing all of the BME sector.
